How it's worked out

For goods you buy yourself (not gifts, not excise goods) sent to Great Britain: if the order is £135 or less in total, the seller or marketplace must charge UK VAT at the point of sale and there is no customs duty, so nothing extra is due on delivery. Over £135, you pay customs duty at the UK rate for your goods (check the Trade Tariff) on the goods plus postage, packaging and insurance, then VAT at 20% on the total including duty, to the delivery company, which may add a handling fee. Gifts over £39 can attract duty. Northern Ireland rules differ. The UK plans to remove the £135 customs duty relief by October 2028 at the latest (GOV.UK, 23 June 2026), after which duty may apply to orders of £135 or less.
